This landmark event, a collaboration of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO), champions international collaboration. By bringing together governments, the private sector, and civil society, WGES is a crucial hub for fostering partnerships aimed at promoting sustainability and protecting our planet’s precious resources. Scheduled for 2-3 October at the Dubai World Trade Centre, this year’s theme, “Empowering Global Action: Unlocking Opportunities and Advancing Progress,” promises an inspiring platform for driving global environmental and green economy advancements.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, a leading figure at DEWA and WGEO, highlighted the summit’s integral role in supporting transformative green solutions and potent climate initiatives. Al Tayer underscored the UAE’s commitment to climate change as a priority for sustainable development, emphasizing the nation’s strategy towards achieving a significant climate milestone.
Marking a novel phase in global climate resilience, the 10th WGES aims to leverage the momentum from the recent achievements of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate, notably the ‘UAE Consensus.’ This agreement represents a global commitment to a transition to a clean energy economy, with the ambitious goal of attaining climate neutrality. In line with these efforts, the launch of the USD 30 billion Alterra Fund aims to stimulate significant investment in climate action, targeting a mobilization of up to USD 250 billion in capital by 2030, to support climate-vulnerable regions.
Aligned with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and other pivotal initiatives, WGES is at the forefront of the UAE’s environmental strategy. By focusing on a range of critical topics from decarbonisation to clean energy, climate finance, circular economy, and more, the summit is a testament to the UAE’s enduring commitment to fostering a sustainable future.
WGES 2024 presents an ambitious agenda across eight pivotal themes. These include advancing decarbonisation and net zero targets, spurring clean energy innovations, enhancing climate finance, promoting circular economy practices, refining policy and regulatory frameworks, leveraging technology against climate change, empowering youth engagement in sustainability, and addressing food and water security challenges.
As the UAE continues to spearhead pivotal climate and environmental initiatives on the global stage, WGES remains a cornerstone event in the international calendar, driving meaningful action towards a greener, more sustainable future.
