Severe Cold Predicted Across India Following Heavy Rains: IMD’s Latest Forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted notably colder weather for India in the coming months, anticipating a significant shift from the extreme heat experienced earlier this year. This warning comes alongside an unusual extension of the rainy season, marking a departure from typical weather patterns.
According to recent forecasts by the IMD, the initiation of the La Nina phenomenon this September is expected to lead to decreased temperatures nationwide, coupled with enhanced rainfall activity. La Nina, characterized by the cooling of ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, contrasts sharply with El Nino’s warming effects. Typically emerging between April and June, La Nina’s influence peaks from October to February and can persist anywhere from nine to two years, predominantly influenced by robust easterly winds that cool the ocean’s surface by directing water westward.
Regions particularly bracing for the brunt of this cold include the mountainous states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir, where temperatures are speculated to drop as low as 3 degrees Celsius. The impending cold wave and the probability of enhanced rainfall pose potential challenges to agriculture, especially in areas reliant on winter crops.
Another notable development is the extension of the monsoon season beyond its usual September conclusion, attributed to the cooling sea effects associated with La Nina. This extension has resulted in unusual weather patterns, especially marked by significant rainfall in the southern and central parts of India.
With the anticipated colder weather on the horizon, the IMD has advised residents to prepare by ensuring adequate heating available, stocking up on essential supplies, and keeping abreast of weather updates.
