Xi Jinping Champions Ecological Conservation and High-Quality Growth in the Yellow River Basin

Xi Jinping Prioritizes Ecological Conservation and High-Quality Growth in the Yellow River Basin

In a significant move to balance ecological conservation with socio-economic development, Chinese President Xi Jinping chaired a symposium in Lanzhou, Gansu province, emphasizing the integral role of the Yellow River Basin in China’s environmental and developmental blueprint. The event underscored the nation’s commitment to high-quality development that adheres to ecological priorities and green growth.

The symposium drew senior political figures, including Cai Qi and Ding Xuexiang from the CPC Central Committee, who, alongside regional leaders, reviewed progress and formulated strategies for the Yellow River Basin’s future. Notably, Zheng Shanjie from the National Development and Reform Commission and officials from Gansu, Shaanxi, and Henan provinces shared insights on ecological protection efforts and developmental achievements within the Basin.

Reflecting on the strategic importance of the Yellow River Basin, Xi Jinping hailed the improvements in ecological quality, water resource management, and the region’s contribution to energy and food security. However, he acknowledged persistent challenges, stressing the need for a systematic, integrated approach to environmental governance and resource conservation.

To achieve comprehensive ecological protection and sustainable development, Xi advocated for significant measures, including enhancing the ecological system’s stability, advancing major ecosystem protection projects, and implementing rigorous water conservation strategies. He highlighted the crucial role of technology, legal frameworks, and fiscal policies in supporting green development and low-carbon transformation.

The Chinese President also called for the implementation of the strictest water resource management practices, emphasizing the importance of balancing development with water sustainability. Strategies for groundwater management, pollution control, and the advancement of water-saving measures were also outlined, underscoring the significance of a water-conserving society.

Xi’s vision extended to disaster prevention and mitigation, where he stressed the need for improved water-sand regulation mechanisms and the reinforcement of major water conservancy projects. The establishment of a robust emergency response system and enhanced public awareness on disaster mitigation were deemed essential for the Basin’s resilience.

Addressing the socio-economic dimension, Xi Jinping envisaged a transition to a green development model, supported by technological innovation and the development of green industries. Strengthening the agricultural sector, optimizing land use, and enhancing industrial capacity were identified as key to the Basin’s high-quality growth.

In reinforcing his commitment to comprehensive reform and opening up, Xi called for national market integration, state-owned enterprise reform, and the fostering of private economy. He envisioned a harmonious development model that bridges urban-rural divides, improves livelihoods, and promotes sustainable urbanization and rural revitalization.

Furthermore, Xi underscored the cultural and historical significance of the Yellow River Basin as the cradle of Chinese civilization. He advocated for the preservation and promotion of the Yellow River culture, integrating cultural heritage with tourism to bolster regional development and national identity.

The symposium concluded with a unified call to action, urging all regions and departments to diligently implement the outlined plans and measures. This commitment to ecological protection and high-quality development along the Yellow River Basin reflects China’s broader aspirations for a sustainable, prosperous future that harmonizes environmental stewardship with economic advancement.
