Biting Cold Wave Engulfs Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh; Temperatures Plummet to Freezing Levels
Jammu and Kashmir, along with Ladakh, are currently in the grip of a severe cold wave, as temperatures have plunged dramatically, distorting the rhythm of daily life. Shopian in the Kashmir Valley has emerged as the chilliest spot, recording a bone-chilling -8.1°C, with Anantnag and Kulgam trailing closely in frigid conditions.
The usually bustling tourist destinations of Gulmarg and Pahalgam have not been spared, as they, too, experience freezing temperatures. Srinagar, known for its breathtaking beauty, is enduring a biting cold at -4.6°C, while the picturesque Sonamarg is enveloped in brisk temperatures of -7.0°C. Over in Jammu, Padder is bracing for -5.7°C, with Banihal slightly warmer at -1.3°C. Surprisingly, Jammu city is relatively mild, with temperatures hovering around 6.5°C.
Ladakh is facing some of the harshest conditions, where Kargil has recorded a severe -8.8°C, and the famous town of Leh is not far behind at -7.4°C. This unrelenting cold wave has triggered a plethora of challenges across the region, including frozen water pipelines, frequent power outages, and manifold disruptions in transportation. In the Kashmir Valley, agricultural operations have come to a standstill, and the iconic Dal Lake is on the verge of freezing, altering the familiar winter landscape.
With the mercury dipping so low, there’s been a marked increase in demand for heating appliances and warm clothing as residents and tourists try to stave off the cold. While the frost-laden surroundings are drawing tourists eager to savor the wintry splendor, they are being urged to remain cautious amidst the harsh weather conditions.
The Meteorological Department has issued a prediction that the cold wave will persist, with little to no expectation of a significant rise in temperatures in the immediate days ahead. As the cold continues its reign over this beautiful yet challenging terrain, individuals and communities are advised to prepare accordingly and remain vigilant.
