Malaysia to Face Warmer Weather from March, but Less Severe than 2024
As the Northeast Monsoon transitions to its conclusion, Malaysians should brace for warmer and drier conditions starting in March. However, this year’s weather pattern is predicted to be less extreme compared to the previous year, thanks to the moderating effects of La Niña.
The Meteorological Department has indicated that this monsoon phase will likely wrap up by mid-March. Subsequently, cloud cover and precipitation will decrease across several regions, particularly in the northern parts of the peninsula like Perak, Pahang, and Kelantan. This reduction in rainfall could lead to more pronounced heat and dryness.
“The ongoing hot and dry period is a cycle we experience annually from February through May,” explained the Meteorological Department’s director-general. “During this time, peak daily temperatures can soar beyond 35°C during early afternoon hours, creating challenging conditions for many.”
The highest temperature recorded recently was 36.1°C at the meteorological station in Felda Teloi Kanan, Baling, Kedah. Notably, both Baling in Kedah and Kuala Kangsar in Perak are experiencing a Level 1 heatwave status as of February 11, which involves sustained daily maximum temperatures between 35°C and 37°C over a three-day span.
Despite the heat, the current weather scenario is forecasted to be less daunting compared to the expected conditions in 2024, primarily due to a mild La Niña event, which is projected to continue until mid-year. This phenomenon should mitigate some of the more intense weather extremes.
Residents are advised to take precautionary measures, including conserving water resources and refraining from open burning. Additionally, it is wise to limit outdoor activities to minimize prolonged heat exposure.
While transitioning into this warmer season, attention to personal and environmental well-being is crucial to coping with the climatic changes expected in the coming months.
