Zambia: Kanyembo’s Inspiring Journey to Protecting Zambia’s Wildlife
Benson Kanyembo’s life stands as a testament to dedication, leadership, and perseverance in safeguarding Zambia’s precious wildlife. His inspiring story, transitioning from a village scout to a revered conservation leader, underscores the transformative impact of hard work and commitment.
Kanyembo’s journey has not only infused hope and passion into the conservation community but has also earned him global recognition at various international platforms. Beginning his career modestly as a carrier, he advanced to the position of head ranger at Conservation South Luangwa (CSL), where he now spearheads a team of 117 community-supported rangers. His innovative strategies combat the challenges of poaching and human-wildlife conflict.
At 54, Kanyembo’s leadership has significantly revitalized CSL, helping him secure esteemed roles, such as the chairperson of the Zambian chapter of the Game Rangers Association of Africa. His impact resonates at international forums, advocating for the protection and conservation of Africa’s natural heritage.
In recognition of his efforts, Kanyembo received the Tusk Wildlife Ranger Award in 2019, making him only the second Zambian to achieve this honor. His remarkable work continued to be celebrated with accolades like the African Ranger Award and the first runner-up Best Game Ranger – Rhino Conservation Award in 2020.
“Winning such awards is indeed an honor,” shares Kanyembo, who has dedicated 31 years to resource protection. “It highlights that regardless of one’s background, hard work and dedication to conservation can be recognized globally.”
Under Kanyembo’s guidance, the team at Conservation South Luangwa is instrumental in preserving the biodiversity of Zambia’s South Luangwa region. The organization collaborates with government bodies, NGOs, and research centers to promote sustainable and responsible use of natural resources.
The rangers regularly patrol to monitor wildlife, execute anti-poaching efforts, and aid habitat restoration. Furthermore, the organization engages local communities through education, capacity-building initiatives, and sustainable tourism efforts. These collaborations empower communities, enabling them to be effective stewards of Zambia’s natural resources while enhancing their livelihood and resilience against challenges like climate change.
A significant milestone under Kanyembo’s leadership is the expansion of the South Luangwa Rapid Response Unit (RRU), a team focused on alleviating human-wildlife conflict. Combining the expertise of community scouts and government wildlife officers, the RRU manages a 24/7 hotline to address incidents ranging from elephant raids to crocodile attacks.
“We work alongside communities at CSL, implementing practical methods to mitigate human-wildlife conflict,” Kanyembo explains. Methods include using deterrents like petrol, onion, garlic, and other natural repellents against elephants and establishing polywire solar fences and chili plantations.
Kanyembo emphasizes that protecting natural resources is a shared responsibility. “We, the scouts, can’t be everywhere all the time. It is imperative for everyone to participate actively in conservation efforts,” he urges.
