IMD Amaravati Celebrates World Meteorological Day with Insightful Discussions
In a significant observation of World Meteorological Day on March 23, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Amaravati in coordination with KL University hosted an enlightening event dedicated to the exploration of meteorological phenomena and their profound impact on global ecosystems and human health.
The event was inaugurated with a compelling keynote address delivered by Sagnik Dey, a renowned Institute Chair Professor from the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences at IIT Delhi. Professor Dey delved into the intricate connections between climate change and human health, spotlighting the increasing threat of diseases such as malaria and dengue as a result of ongoing environmental changes. The discourse highlighted the critical need for a deeper understanding of these long-term implications to mitigate health risks.
Adding to the discussion, S Stella, director of IMD Amaravati, emphasized the urgency of adopting preemptive strategies in the face of rising global temperatures. Stella pointed out, “Ignoring the current trends of climate change not only puts us at risk but also jeopardizes the well-being of future generations.” She elaborated on the direct correlation between escalating temperatures and an upsurge in extreme weather phenomena across the globe—including heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires, and increasingly severe tropical cyclones. Stella provided insights into the recent climatic shifts observed in Andhra Pradesh, stating that 2023 has marked a noticeable increase in heatwave incidents, signaling a pressing call to action for communities and policymakers alike.
The World Meteorological Day event served as an informative platform, bringing to light the intricate relationship between meteorological changes and their wide-ranging effects on the planet and its inhabitants. Through discussions and presentations, the IMD Amaravati and its partners reiterated the importance of heightened awareness and proactive measures to tackle the challenges posed by climate change, underscoring a collective responsibility towards safeguarding our environment and ensuring a healthier future for the coming generations.
