Odisha set to experience heatwave for next four days
As Odisha battles through intense heat waves, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about an imminent heatwave that is expected to grip certain regions of the state for the next four days, starting from Wednesday. The coastal areas are anticipated to suffer additional discomfort due to high humidity levels during this span.
The weather specialists predict that the current hot conditions are likely to persist until April 7. It is anticipated that there might be a shift in the weather pattern following this period, which could potentially lead to a decrease in temperatures to below 38 degrees Celsius on some of the days. On Tuesday, the heat intensity was such that seven locations within the state experienced temperatures soaring above 41 degrees Celsius, with Malkangiri recording the highest at 41.7 degrees Celsius. The capital city of Bhubaneswar wasn’t spared either, as it observed a peak temperature of 37.2 degrees Celsius.
Meteorological experts attribute this surge in temperature to the flow of northwesterly and westerly dry winds, coupled with high solar radiation, which have collectively elevated the mercury levels beyond 40 degrees Celsius in numerous districts across the state. This phenomenon, where temperatures are 3 to 5 degrees Celsius higher than the usual, is expected to persist across the affected districts until April 6.
Furthermore, the IMD has noted that the relative humidity, which usually stays within the 50 to 70 percent range along the coastal belt of Odisha, will likely intensify the discomfort during this timeframe. As a result, amid these sweltering and humid conditions, the weather forecast agency recommends that precautions be taken, especially when venturing out during the daytime, particularly between 10 am and 3 pm, to avoid the adverse effects of the heatwave.
