Guwahati: GRIHA Regional Conclave on ‘Accelerating Climate Action in the Built Environment’ Held
Located in one of India’s most rapidly urbanizing areas, Assam is confronting distinctive challenges associated with its infrastructure growth. Critical issues such as climate sensitivity, resource management, and urban sprawl are fiercely pressing on this region, which supports a population exceeding 35 million. As urban infrastructure and environmental resources come under more strain, especially in the Guwahati Metropolitan Region—where over 1.1 million reside—the impending infrastructure expansion demands immediate transformative efforts.
The GRIHA Council in association with the Assam Science Technology & Environment Council (ASTEC) and the Government of Assam orchestrated the 5th GRIHA Regional Conclave on March 10, 2025. The theme ‘Accelerating Climate Action in the Built Environment’ took center stage at this event held in Guwahati.
The occasion was honored by Keshab Mahanta, the Minister overseeing departments such as Health & Family Welfare, Science and Technology, and Information & Technology for the Government of Assam. Emphasizing recent achievements, the minister highlighted Advantage Assam 2.0, an investment and infrastructure summit from 2025 which bolstered Assam’s potential in areas like clean energy, green technologies, and low-carbon infrastructure development through partnerships with both national and international investors.
The conclave featured technical sessions offering valuable insights into promoting sustainable practices through policy and legislative implementation, the urgent need to bolster resilience in disaster-prone zones, and the merger of smart and sustainable infrastructure development strategies. These discussions were led by regional government and industry specialists, emphasizing an integrated approach.
Dr. Jaideep Baruah, Director of the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), spoke to the region’s leadership role in pioneering sustainable development. “Assam’s growing involvement with global investors and its emphasis on clean energy and green technologies reflect a staunch commitment to harmonizing economic growth with environmental stewardship. Platforms like this are crucial in forging collaborations that chart the path for a sustainable future,” he noted.
Sanjay Seth, the Vice President & Chief Executive Officer of the GRIHA Council and Senior Director of the Sustainable Infrastructure Programme at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), emphasized the importance of aligning with the country’s vision of establishing a ‘Net Zero’ emission status by 2070. He advocated for a proactive role of the built environment in accelerating climate action through embracing low-carbon developmental pathways. “As we advance into a period marked by escalating climate challenges, it is vital to champion sustainable building practices aimed not only at reducing carbon emissions but also at enhancing infrastructure resilience against future climate threats,” Seth insisted.
The GRIHA Regional Conclave serves as a vital platform where stakeholders converge to exchange innovative solutions and promote the adoption of low-carbon technology and practices in construction—thus ensuring a sustainable future for all.
