Anticipating Summer: The Arrival of Scorpion Season in the UAE

Here’s when summer will officially begin in the UAE

As the days go by, you’ve probably begun noticing changes in the air – the subtle humidity, the warmth of the afternoons, and the glaring brightness of the sun. These are all hints that a new season is upon us. Summer is fast approaching, marking the end of winter in the United Arab Emirates. The cool months seem to have raced by.

The UAE is transitioning through its final stage of winter, characterized by rising temperatures. This period, known as the Scorpion Season, began on February 10 and will continue until March 20. During this time, there is an anticipation of increased rainfall, and temperatures will start climbing steadily, heralding the advent of summer.

Consider this period a prelude to summer, similar to spring, where nature thrives – plants grow abundantly, flowers blossom, and vivid greenery becomes noticeable across the landscape. During this time, bees are more active, livestock is healthier, and milk production is elevated. Temperature fluctuations are common, showing a rise and fall pattern until the summer fully sets in, bringing consistently high temperatures.

This week, the UAE is expected to experience rainfall. The National Centre of Meteorology has forecasted showers across various parts of the country from Sunday, February 16 until Tuesday, February 18. Already, light rain has been noted over the weekend in regions such as Sharjah, the Al Dhafra Region, and Ras Al Khaimah. It is anticipated that the precipitation will extend to additional areas in the coming days.

The forecasts indicate that from Sunday to Tuesday, the weather will range from partly cloudy to cloudy, accompanied by showers that are generally light to medium in intensity. The meteorological department attributes these conditions to the influence of an upper air jet stream approaching from the west.

During this transitional period into summer, dust storms may also arise due to anticipated strong winds, which are characteristic of this time of year. These high winds can lead to increased humidity and rising temperatures.

As rainfall occurs, motorists are urged by the National Centre of Meteorology to exercise safety on the roads in areas experiencing such conditions. They are advised to drive only if necessary, use low-beam headlights when visibility is compromised, and to remain informed of weather updates through official channels.
