Canada Invests $13.4 Million in Pender Harbour’s Eco-Friendly Research Hub

Canada Pledges $13.4 Million for Net-Zero Research Facility on Sunshine Coast

The Canadian government has committed an investment exceeding $13.4 million to revolutionize the Sunshine Coast with the development of the Pender Harbour Ocean Discovery Station (PODS). This groundbreaking net-zero facility represents a collaborative endeavor involving the Loon Foundation and the shíshálh Nation, effectively merging shíshálh traditional wisdom, contemporary scientific approaches, and local cultural elements to advocate for environmental stewardship while celebrating the region’s abundant biodiversity.

The announcement of this significant funding was made by Member of Parliament for West Vancouver, Sunshine Coast, Sea to Sky Country, along with the Executive Director of the Loon Foundation and the leader of the shíshálh Nation.

Anticipated to commence operations in Spring 2027, PODS will exemplify advanced green building practices, serving as a paragon of sustainability and inclusiveness. Designed to be more than just a research center, the facility will encompass interactive displays, laboratories, galleries, and performance spaces. It promises to become a dynamic center for aquatic research, fostering community involvement and cultural initiatives. Through a spectrum of courses and public events, PODS aspires to ignite a passion for environmental stewardship and enhance a collective appreciation for the natural environment.

For over two decades, the Loon Foundation has ardently worked to preserve biodiversity and foster environmental responsibility along the Sunshine Coast. The shíshálh Nation, custodians of the swiya since ancient times, regard PODS as a valuable enhancement to their ongoing efforts. The facility will be accessible to community members and visitors of varying ages, capabilities, and backgrounds, offering opportunities to engage with immersive exhibits and activities that honor the ecological and cultural legacy of the region.

PODS is strategically positioned to spur local leadership in scientific research and promote regenerative tourism, thus bolstering the Sunshine Coast’s reputation as a pioneer in sustainability and cultural enrichment.
