Chandigarh Faces Early Heatwave as Temperatures Hit 35.1°C: What to Expect Next

Day Temperature Breaches 35°C Mark in Chandigarh

As temperatures surge in the region, the city of Chandigarh experienced a notable rise in mercury levels, signalling the onset of hotter days. The temperature on Thursday climbed to 35.1°C, a notable increase from the previous day’s 34.3°C, marking temperatures that are 3.5 degrees above the norm for this time of year.

This rise is consistent with forecasts predicting above-average heat for this year. City meteorologists warn that the thermometer is set to climb further over the following days. The temperature of 35.1°C represents a threshold matching last year’s peaks, which was recorded on March 29, 2024. Historically, the thermometer has climbed even higher, reaching 37°C on March 31, 2022. The all-time record, however, remains unbroken at 38.2°C, noted at the airport on March 25, 2010.

Weather experts have attributed this rising heat to the lack of any active Western Disturbances (WD) currently impacting the area. “Without any active WDs expected to touch this region shortly, we anticipate continued increases in temperature, leading to warmer and drier conditions,” stated Surender Paul, director at the local meteorological department. Although a Western Disturbance has been noted over Jammu and Kashmir, its effects have not permeated into the Chandigarh region.

The climbing temperatures are not limited to daytime readings. Nights are also becoming warmer, as evidenced by the minimum temperature increasing from 17.5°C to 18.5°C, a modest 0.6 degrees above normal. The trend of warming is expected to continue with the dawn of April, pushing temperatures higher.

Forecasts for the upcoming days suggest that daily maxima will hover between 33°C and 35°C, while nighttime temperatures are predicted to range from 16°C to 19°C. This anticipated steady rise in temperature underlines the importance of preparations for gruelling heat conditions.
