Climate Alarm: Keylong’s Rising Temperatures Surpass Shimla and Kalpa, Triggering Global Warming Concerns

Keylong’s Temperature Surpasses Shimla and Kalpa: Experts Point to Global Warming

In an unprecedented turn of events, Keylong, traditionally the coldest region in Himachal Pradesh, has recorded temperatures surpassing both Shimla and Kalpa. On Saturday, Keylong’s maximum temperature hit 27.3°C, marking the second-highest temperature ever documented in the region’s history. Just a few notches below the record 28.3°C set in 2020, this sudden rise in temperature has raised alarms about the escalating effects of global warming.

Comparatively, Shimla recorded a maximum temperature of 26.0°C, while Kalpa noted 25.1°C. The spike in temperature is not restricted to daytime; even nighttime temperatures in the state have been soaring. Dehra Gopipur reported a nighttime temperature of 26°C, and Paonta Sahib followed closely with 25°C.

Experts are attributing these unusual temperature increases to global warming. September, which is typically cooler in Himachal Pradesh, has shown erratic weather patterns this year, with extreme heat taking the spotlight after the monsoon rains subsided.

The heatwave hasn’t spared Una and Bilaspur either, as these areas have seen temperatures climbing to 36.2°C and 35.1°C, respectively. Prolonged periods of sunshine and clear skies have intensified the heat, with humidity levels soaring even during the night.

The Meteorological Department has forecasted clear skies for the upcoming days, with temperatures expected to rise even further on September 23rd and 24th. A shift in weather is anticipated by the 25th of September, bringing rain to several parts of the state and a yellow alert for strong winds and lightning. Another rainy spell is expected on the 27th, but temperatures are predicted to climb again from September 28th onwards.

Experts caution that these rising temperatures in historically cold regions like Keylong signify larger climate changes. Should this trend persist, the repercussions for Himachal Pradesh’s environment, agriculture, and tourism could be substantial.
