National Workshop on Multi-level Action for Climate Resilient Cities Paves Way for Sustainable Urban Development
India marked a groundbreaking moment in its climate action journey at the National Workshop on Multi-level Action for Climate Resilient Cities held on 18-19 September 2024. This significant event witnessed the unveiling of seven Net-zero Climate Resilient City Action Plans (CRCAPs) for 2070, showcasing a unified commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 as part of India’s ambitious climate goals. This initiative not only establishes India as a pioneer in South and Southeast Asia for urban climate resilience but also aligns with the global climate aspirations addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at CoP26 in Glasgow, 2021.
The cities of Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Udaipur, and Siliguri have each developed tailored Net-zero CRCAPs with the support of the CapaCITIES project, backed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. This project played a pivotal role in enhancing these cities’ capacities to forge low-carbon, climate-resilient urban strategies, thereby contributing to both India’s and the global climate objectives. The plans include innovative solutions ranging from urban flood early warning systems and solar-powered charging stations for electric buses, to the restoration of water bodies and the implementation of Miyawaki forests.
The workshop was graced by eminent personalities and experts including Tokhan Sahu, Minister of State for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, alongside officials from across 30 Indian cities, representing 16 states. More than 150 participants, including representatives from the Asian Development Bank and World Bank, engaged in fruitful discussions on a myriad of climate interventions and shared insights into building climate resilience.
Highlights and testimonials from the event underscored the dire need for urgent action against climate anomalies, attributed to changing climate patterns. High temperatures, unexpected rainfall, and extreme cold spells have accentuated the vulnerability of India’s poor, elderly, and children to climate change effects. Addressing these concerns, the workshop participants collectively emphasized the importance of adopting comprehensive urban climate strategies, fostering green livelihoods, leveraging climate finance, and scaling up effective climate interventions.
Through expert discussions and shared experiences, the workshop not only identified the critical elements for climate resilience but also celebrated India’s leadership in integrating climate action into urban development. This collective effort, marked by the release of the Net-zero Climate Resilient City Action Plans, signifies a key milestone in India’s journey towards sustainable urban planning and sets a precedent for other nations in the region to follow.
