Extreme Heat Altering Travel Plans, People’s Daily Routines Worldwide
People around the globe are feeling the impacts of increasingly extreme weather events. A recent study has uncovered significant changes in daily routines and transportation choices as a result of extreme heat.
Researchers from several universities conducted the study titled “Understanding How Extreme Heat Impacts Human Activity-Mobility and Time Use Patterns,” which delves into the effects of rising temperatures on human behavior in urban settings. The study analyzed data from the American Time Use Survey and weather information, focusing on major metropolitan areas across the United States.
The findings reveal that on extremely hot days, people generally stay indoors more, reduce outdoor activities, and avoid non-essential travel. This behavioral shift has notable implications for transportation preferences. During heat waves, there’s a marked increase in car usage, while walking, biking, and public transit use drops significantly.
Public transit usage, for example, plummets by nearly 50% on extremely hot days as individuals favor air-conditioned private vehicles. This trend presents challenges for cities aiming to promote sustainable transportation options.
Additionally, the study highlights that extreme heat disproportionately affects vulnerable groups. Low-income individuals and those without access to cars, who often rely on walking or public transport, face greater exposure to dangerous temperatures. These groups also tend to have less flexibility in their work schedules, requiring them to travel even during oppressive heat waves.
Older adults also find it more difficult to adapt their routines during heat waves, which can lead to increased social isolation.
Extreme heat exacerbates existing inequities in mobility and activity participation. There’s a pressing need for targeted policy interventions to protect the most vulnerable populations from the impacts of rising temperatures.
As cities worldwide grapple with the effects of climate change, this research underscores the urgent necessity for adaptive strategies to ensure equitable transportation access and maintain quality of life for all residents during extreme heat events.
