The outcome of this election highlights individuals who will spearhead the organization’s efforts in advancing ecological science and addressing global ecological challenges.
New Governing Board Leaders
The ESA membership has elected several key figures to strategic roles. Rese (Emily Therese) Cloyd has been named President-Elect for the 2026-2027 term. Currently serving as Associate Director of Fisheries and Wildlife at the District of Columbia’s Department of Energy and Environment, Cloyd is tasked with conserving wildlife and ecosystems. Her impressive record includes directing the Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology, where she has advanced the interface between scientific knowledge and public policy.
Cloyd’s contributions to ESA are significant and ongoing, encompassing roles within the Professional Ethics and Appeals Committee and previous governance, underscoring her commitment to ecological science and community engagement.
Supporting Voices in Governance
Shannon LaDeau, now the secretary of ESA, holds a pivotal position at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. Her expertise in socioecological systems is critical in understanding and mitigating ecosystem disruptions. Beyond her research, LaDeau is recognized for mentorship and her work advising the National Ecological Observatory Network.
Joining the board is Zakiya Holmes Leggett, an Associate Professor at North Carolina State University. Leggett’s work in forest soil ecology and her leadership in diversity initiatives, including the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program, spotlight her dedication to inclusive engagement in environmental science.
Returning for a second term is Kelly Ramirez from the University of Texas at El Paso, recognized for her contributions to soil microbial ecology. Her advocacy for soil biodiversity and involvement with the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative reinforce the importance of integrating ecological insights into broader environmental policy.
Professional Certification Board Enhancement
The Board of Professional Certification will also see new additions, with Joseph Bruseo of Holyoke Community College, Justin Compton of Stonehill College, and Angela Sondenaa representing the Nez Perce Tribe being elected as Certified Senior Ecologists. These professionals will uphold the standards of education and peer evaluation pivotal to the reliability of the ecological profession.
Looking Ahead with Strategic Leadership
ESA board members are united in their resolve to guide the organization toward new ecological discoveries and societal applications. The newly elected members, alongside current leaders, will direct the Society’s strategic course, elevating ecological research and education. Continuing members, such as current President Stephanie Hampton and Vice-President for Finance Jeannine Cavender-Bares, provide stable governance, ensuring continuity.
In sum, the leadership selection reaffirms ESA’s commitment to a diverse representation of professionals dedicated to ecological advancement. As they venture into future initiatives, the selected leaders embody a mosaic of expertise that promises to strengthen the society’s reach and impact.
