‘World now looks to India as a leader for climate action’: Highlights of Bhupender Yadav’s Address
In a compelling statement at the World Sustainable Development Summit 2025, the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, declared that the world has begun to see India as a frontrunner in the arena of climate action.
He pointed out that in 2020 alone, India achieved a significant reduction in its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 7.93 percent, marking a remarkable milestone in its climate initiatives. This impressive endeavor illustrates India’s unwavering commitment to tackling climate change challenges head-on.
The minister stressed the pivotal role the Global South, particularly India, plays in shaping climate policy. This region bears the brunt of climate change impacts and offers valuable insights and solutions grounded in sustainable development practices that could serve the entire planet.
“The Global South is at the forefront of driving the climate agenda,” Yadav stated. He invoked the need for augmented collaboration, heightened ambition, and robust action at the international level.
Reassuring the international community of India’s dedication to sustainable global practices, Yadav spoke of numerous innovative initiatives undertaken by India. Among these are the International Solar Alliance (ISA), the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), and the Mission Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE). Each of these initiatives reinforces India’s stance as a global climate leader, committed to ensuring that climate action stays inclusive, ambitious, and collaborative.
Yadav urged developed nations to meet their financial and technological commitments, particularly under the framework of the Paris Agreement. He emphasized the crucial necessity for enhanced international cooperation to bolster Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), ensuring they effectively tackle both challenges and opportunities associated with climate action.
India continues to set examples and lead by fostering sustainable development practices that are indispensable for effective climate management. With ongoing efforts and international cooperation, the nation is poised to play a transformative role in shaping the future of global climate discourse.
Through these commitments and actions, India is not only striving for a sustainable future for itself but also for the broader global community, positioning itself as a beacon of change and a pioneering force in climate action.
