Marlborough Community Engages in Climate Advocacy: Reflections from the Citizen’s Climate Lobby Town Event

Marlborough residents share climate concerns at town event

At an inspiring community event held at Marlborough Town Hall on Thursday, May 23, the local chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby UK took the initiative to bring climate concerns into sharper focus amidst election year fervor. The organization, known for its grassroots efforts in climate advocacy, added a new chapter to Marlborough’s ongoing dialogue on environmental sustainability by screening the forward-looking documentary, 2040.

This event not only served as a cinematic exploration of what a sustainable future might hold but also commemorated a significant local legacy of environmental activism. It has been nearly two decades since Marlborough embarked on its climate-conscious journey, a path first illuminated through a meeting spearheaded by the esteemed late MP Michael Meacher, remembered for his dedication to environmental issues.

“Our climate event was a terrific success, with over a hundred people in the audience. Marlborough has become a hub of climate action,” shared Judy Hindley, a co-founder of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby UK. The event was noted for its vibrant energy and proactive engagement from the community, reflecting a deep-seated concern and readiness to act upon climate issues.

The screening of 2040 was preceded by an insightful introduction from Professor Dave Waltham, who struck a chord with the audience by emphasizing the availability of solutions to the climate crisis. “We already have the solutions to climate change; we just need the policies to put them in place,” he remarked, a statement that resonated well with the attendees.

Following the film, the atmosphere was abuzz with discussions and interactions, as attendees gathered around the information table, eager to learn more about the policy changes promoted by Citizens’ Climate Lobby. This engagement highlighted the community’s enthusiasm to venture into a post-carbon future, as vividly depicted in 2040.

Looking ahead, Citizens’ Climate Lobby UK is preparing to host another significant event in October, aptly titled “Can We Afford Net Zero?”. This forthcoming discussion aims to delve into the complexities and necessities of policy changes that support the transition towards net zero emissions, consolidating Marlborough’s stance as a proactive community eager to tackle climate change head-on.

As Marlborough continues to foster a culture of environmental consciousness and action, events like these serve as critical milestones in the journey towards a sustainable future. The collective concerns and aspirations shared at this town event signify a community united by the shared goal of addressing the climate crisis, poised to contribute to the global efforts in mitigating climate change.
