Record-breaking Chill Grips Pakistan: PMD Chief Meteorologist
Freezing Weather to Persist Across the Nation
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an alarming forecast detailing the persistence of severe cold and dry weather conditions across Pakistan. As the nation braces for a significant drop in temperature, the chilling weather is expected to set new records for January and December lows.
In a recent discussion, Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz highlighted the advent of an intense cold wave poised to engulf the country. Temperatures are predicted to hit single-digit lows, extending this icy period for at least a week or potentially longer.
Unprecedented Temperature Drops
This winter has already ushered in a historic cold spell for Pakistan. Sardar Sarfaraz emphasized that the temperatures recorded in January and December have been distinctly lower than those seen during the same timeframe in 2023. Such a steep temperature decline signals extreme weather, with expectations that mercury levels will dip even further in the upcoming days.
Particularly, regions like Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are on alert as a fresh influx of cold air is projected to hit in the next 9 to 10 days.
Brief Reprieve for Gilgit-Baltistan
The residents of Gilgit-Baltistan might experience a temporary relief from the harsh chill with a brief period of rain predicted to last 2 to 3 days. Nevertheless, the region is forewarned to anticipate a return to the cold and dry conditions immediately following the rain.
Amidst this cold chaos, the northern territories have been enveloped by substantial snowfall, with reports of some areas receiving up to 9 inches of snow. These regions now resemble pristine winter wonderlands, their snow-laden mountains and valleys offering tranquil and picturesque views.
Citizens Advised to Stay Informed and Safe
The Chief Meteorologist has urged citizens to remain informed by checking the latest weather advisories regularly. Precautionary measures are pivotal, especially for those residing in areas bracing for severe snowfall or experiencing extremely low temperatures.
This winter season’s uniqueness is further underscored by predictions of unusually dry conditions. The PMD anticipates below-average snowfall and rainfall throughout the current season, a notable deviation from the precipitation trends of past years.
As Pakistan faces these extreme cold conditions, staying prepared and informed is crucial to navigating such a challenging weather pattern.
