Floods: More Evacuees Reported in Several States
The number of people seeking refuge from floods has significantly increased across several states as of Wednesday morning, with 4,423 individuals now housed in 34 temporary relief centers. This marks an increase from the 4,147 evacuees reported just the night before.
In the state of Kedah, the Social Welfare Department’s Disaster Info portal indicates that 1,477 people from the districts of Baling, Kota Setar, Pendang, and Pokok Sena are being sheltered in 11 different centers. The previous night, this number was slightly lower at 1,285 evacuees. Notably, water levels in the Sungai Anak Bukit at TAR Bridge and Taman Aman in Kota Setar have surpassed the danger levels, with measurements of 1.91m and 2.99m, respectively.
In Melaka, specifically in the district of Jasin, the number of displaced individuals has risen to 197. They are currently housed in various educational facilities, including SK Seri Mendapat, SMK Dang Anum, and SMK Dato Abdul Rahman Ya’kob. The water level in Sungai Kesang, a critical marker in Jasin, is reportedly above the alert level at 5.01m.
The situation in Perak has also intensified, with 1,114 people now displaced, showing an increase from the 1,031 reported the previous evening. This involves residents from five districts: Perak Tengah, Kerian, Kuala Kangsar, Muallim, and Hilir Perak, who have been distributed across eight relief centers. Additionally, several rivers have exceeded danger levels, namely Sungai Rui and Sungai Perak in Hulu Perak, and Sungai Bidor in Hilir Perak.
In the state of Pahang, particularly in Temerloh, the number of evacuees has risen to 1,552. Last night, 1,481 individuals were recorded in seven centers, but this number has now increased, necessitating accommodations across nine centers. The local water levels in Sungai Semantan are above the warning level, recorded at 36.18m.
Meanwhile, in Johor, the situation is relatively stable, though there is a slight increase in evacuees, now at 17, up from 15 who were reported last night. These individuals are seeking shelter at SK Seri Bunut in Batu Pahat. Several rivers, including Sungai Lenik, Sungai Simpang Kanan, and Sungai Sembrong, have reached warning levels, compounding concerns about potential future displacements.
Selangor is also facing challenges as both Hulu Selangor and Hulu Langat have recorded a rise in evacuees to a total of 66, up from 46. The evacuees are being accommodated at Balai Raya Kampung Alah Batu and SK Sungai Serai. The water level in Sungai Bernam, located in the Hulu Selangor district, has surpassed danger levels, reaching a concerning 27.68m.
The situation remains dynamic as authorities continue efforts to manage and mitigate the impact of these floods, ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected populations.
