Understanding Telangana’s Extreme Temperature Variations: Causes and Impacts

Why Telangana Experiences Sharp Temperature Fluctuations

Telangana, particularly Hyderabad, is currently witnessing notable temperature swings between day and night, a climatic pattern deeply influenced by its geographical positioning on the Deccan plateau and extremely low humidity levels.

This distinctive weather pattern, where temperatures plunge during the night and rise significantly during the day, is a hallmark of the region. Experts have identified this as diurnal temperature variation, a phenomenon largely attributed to Telangana’s unique location on the expansive Deccan plateau.

The Head of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad explains that the region’s geography plays a crucial role in these temperature dynamics. The Deccan plateau, known for its propensity to cool rapidly at night and warm swiftly during daylight hours, facilitates the easy flow of cold winds from cooler regions into Telangana. This is unlike the weather patterns observed in other southern Indian states or even in the northern parts of the country, where temperatures tend to remain relatively higher.

A leading weather specialist in Hyderabad emphasizes the need for extensive observation and analysis of these climatic occurrences. He points out that there will likely be significant shifts in weather patterns in the coming weeks. For instance, on January 21, Hyderabad experienced an extraordinarily low humidity level of just 8 percent, reminiscent of desert conditions. Such extreme weather fluctuations, marked by intense cold and hot phases, are projected to continue throughout January and possibly into February, necessitating further study.

These dramatic temperature changes were prominently felt across multiple regions in Hyderabad and various districts of Telangana during the week. On Tuesday, daytime temperatures ranged from 33 to 38 degrees Celsius across the state. By contrast, the minimum temperatures recorded from Tuesday night into Wednesday by the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) ranged from a chilly 6.9 degrees Celsius to 10 degrees Celsius.

This multifaceted climatic phenomenon underscores the complex interplay between geography, weather patterns, and atmospheric conditions that define Telangana’s climate, making it both unique and unpredictable in the context of diurnal temperature variations.

The intriguing climatic dynamics of Hyderabad and Telangana continue to capture the interest of meteorologists and climate enthusiasts alike, highlighting the importance of ongoing observation and analysis to better understand these unique environmental patterns.
